Fixing the mess I made with POIs

ohmygod said on August 28th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

I have a Garmin Nuvi 200. I just started downloading POIs and they have now filled up my Favorites because I used the Garmin direct option. When the POI loader asked me where to install the files I chose the 'gpx' folder on my SD card thinking it must want a location on the GPS card, not my computer. (I don't think it put them there as it is too small)

I now understand how to do it correctly. How do I remove the POIs from my Favorites?

Unless you do one at a time the only other way is to do a hard reset . You can do this by holding your finger in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and powering up the unit at the same time. You will loose your favorites and other personal settings that you will have to re-set.Time zone ,language, etc.

If on your sd card just put card in card reader and delete the info on the card.It will show as a drive on your computer.

Have a nuvi 760, I am in the same boat. I downloaded the timmys poi and my fav is now full and of course not convenient when looking for my other fav that I added.
How do I know whether the POI is on the SD card or on the computer?
What is the correct way to download the poi and (also the icon if there is one for the poi) so it is filed appropriately. I read some info on this site which was helpful but I really need clear step by step instructions

will do the reset charlesd45 described.
Thanks

How to make subfolders, download files and develop categories.

1.Go to my documents on your computer and make a folder and name it My poi’s.
2.Click on My poi’s folder. Now right click and make subfolders naming them based on type of files you plan to download. Example: Food, Alerts, Parks, Attractions and etc.
3.Go to POIfriend Pois by categories files. Click on first file you want to download and click on show pois and once the list comes up click on download for my gps and select the file type (GPS). Note if you select Garmin Direct they will go straight to your favorites. Put a check mark in Zip file with data and icon if you want to include the Bmp (icon) with csv file. If you include zip file make sure to unzip the file after downloading it to your computer. Now you need to place the CSV and bmp file in one of the subfolders you created. Repeat process until you have downloaded and placed all the csv files and icons into the correct subfolders.
4.Now if you want to add your own personal bmp (icons) or mp3 (sounds). Save them in the correct subfolder you want the mp3 or icon for. Make sure gps has the capability for mp3 before adding
5.Now go to each subfolder and name the csv, bmp and mp3 file the same name except for the extensions. Most cases all you need to do is type the name and the extensions will take care of themselves. Double check to make sure they are all named exactly the same. This is how it should look.

>My pois=main folder

>>Department stores=subfolder
>>>Pennys.csv
>>>Pennys.bmp
>>>Pennys.mp3
>>>Sears.csv
>>>Sears.bmp
>>>Sears.mp3

>>Restaurants=subfolder
>>>Cracker Barrel.csv
>>>Cracker Barrel.bmp
>>>Cracker Barrel.mp3
>>>>Sonny's.csv
>>>>Sonny's.bmp
>>>>Sonny's.mp3

>>Alerts=subfolder
>>>Redlight cameras.csv
>>>Redlight cameras.bmp
>>>Redlight cameras.mp3
>>>Speed cameras.csv
>>>Speed cameras.bmp
>>>Speed cameras.mp3

6.Connect your GPS to your computer using the usb cable.
7.Now run poi loader http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ .
8.When you see screen find device make sure you select the proper one. If using sd card use the pull down window .The arrow located across from device and selects the sd card.
9.Click next and put mark in Install new custom Poi’s onto your device.
10.Click next. Using Browse make sure to select the folder location for My poi’s not the subfolders. Looking below on same screen you will see selection for either express or manual mode. If you plan to set alerts for your custom poi’s select the manual mode. This will allow you to set alert by speed or distance. Using manual mode keep clicking next until the file comes up you want the alerts for .If you use ignore it skips the file. Click next.
11.Now you should get message so many points of interest has been installed to your device.
12.Based on model. Touch where to, my locations, extras and touch custom pois last and you will see the ones you downloaded.
13.Each time you run poiloader it will over write the existing files.
